Reports Call for Problem Solving
and Critical Thinking Skills in Education

Several reports on the current state of education call for new emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking skills.

The following is a brief list of just a few that urge these skills for students (as reported and paraphrased by the American Association for the Advancement of Science's This Year in School Science 1989: Scientific Literacy):
A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform (1983). National Commission on Excellence in Education."We live in a new era in which 'knowledge, learning, information, and skilled intelligence are the raw materials of commerce."
The Forgotten Half: Pathways to Success for America's Youth and Young Families (1988),William T. Grant Foundation - Commission on Work, Family and Citizenship. "The educational program should emphasize instructional processes that require critical thinking and problem solving."
To Secure Our Future: The Federal Role in Education (1989). National Center on Education and the Economy. "The major goals of schooling are to develop higher-order thinking skills and the ability to use knowledge to solve complex problems."
The Unfinished Agenda: The Role of Vocational Education in the High School (1985). National Commission on Secondary Vocational Education in the High School. "Vocational education programs should stress problem solving, analytical thinking, scientific inquiry and reasoning."
Technology and Employment: Innovation and Growth in the U. S. Economy (1987), Richard Cyert and D.C. Mowery. "The essentials skills needed for employment are problemsolving...."
Building a Quality Workforce: A Joint Initiative of the U.S. Departments of Labor, Education and Commerce (1988), Office of Public Affairs, Employment and Training Administration, U.S. Department of Labor. "The trend toward more flexible modes of working and the decentralization of authority demand workers with abilities in problemsolving..."
Workplace Basics: The Skills Employers Want (1988), American Society for Training and Development. "The nature of economic changes and heightened competitiveness both require an 'upskilling' of workers. Workers must be innovative and have the ability to solve problems and make decisions."
