In the 1800s, reading was taught by phonics. However, from 1881 on, there was a tremendous increase in the "Look-Say" or "Whole Language" method. By 1955, it was the main method being used.
In 1955, Dr. Rudolph Flesch published Why Johnny Can't Read. It was thoroughly researched. He stated that "In every single research study ever made phonics was shown to be superior." He urged teachers and the public to rebel, but they did not.
In 1981, Dr. Flesch published Why Johnny Still Can't Read, complaining that 85% of schools were still teaching reading with "Look-Say" rather than Phonics. He cited the work of the Reading Reform Foundation, now called Phonics Institute.
In 1997, a disgusted Congress mandated the creation of a panel to study reading.
In 2000, the National Reading Panel reported what Flesch and Phonics Institute had - Phonics is the best way to teach reading.
Finally, many schools have switched back to Phonics.

In 1946, Dr. James Conant claimed that the scientific method does not exist. Top educators adopted this. No national educational reform program has included it, even in 2001.
In 1958, Dr. Jack Easley, a respected and scholarly educator, published an article falsifying Dr. Conant's claims that the scientific method does not exist. He urged that it be reinstated as an educational objective. He was ignored by our top educators. The dispute was kept a deep dark secret.
In 1992, the scientific method was still not in any national education reform program. It was in just a few pages of many science textbooks. In an effort to correct the blunder, Norman W. Edmund issued The General Pattern of the Scientific Method SM-14, and Edmund's Idea & Research Report on GPSM SM-14 Revised Editions were published in 1994.
From 1992 to 2001 he sent thousands of copies and specially prepared reports to top educators and their organizations. They have ignored all of them and have not revealed the dispute to their members or the general public, thus keeping the BLUNDER a deep dark secret.
